Goethe wrote the play "Egmont" in 1788. It told the story of the Duke of Egmont, a Dutch nobleman who resisted the Spanish Inquisition and was executed by the Duke of Alba.
Beethoven set the play to music, consisting of the famous Overture, two songs for soprano, and narration accompanied by full symphony orchestra. The Overture became the de facto anthem of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.
Here is "Egmont" in its entirety.
