Leaving the tragic story of the miller and his brook, we refresh ourselves with a lesser-known work of Beethoven, the String Quintet in E-flat Major, Opus 4.
In 1795, Beethoven was 25 years old and had already published his Opus 1 piano trios, Opus 2 piano sonatas, and Opus 3 string trio, and was circling around the arena of the string quartet, a genre very much in demand in Vienna but dominated by the towering figures of Haydn and Mozart. His Opus 4 string quintet was a re-working of the wind octet he had composed in 1792, but was never published during his lifetime, finally appearing in 1837 as Opus 103. The quintet is a delightful work, and is presented here with score, performed by the Endellion String Quartet.
