The Piano Concerto in B-flat is one of Beethoven’s earliest great works. Begun in 1793 when Beethoven was still in Bonn, it took its final form in 1795 when the 24-year-old composer performed it in one of his first public appearances in Vienna.
A showpiece for his dazzling technique as well as his emerging fame as a composer, he finally had it published in 1801, modestly writing to his publisher “it is not one of my best” but assuring him that it would not cause him embarrassment. Though it was first in order of composition, the B-flat concerto was published after the later-composed concerto in C, and is thus known as his second piano concerto.
