Beethoven’s eleventh piano sonata, the Opus 22 “Grande Sonata” in B-flat major, was his personal favorite among his early sonatas.
He informed his publisher that “die Sonate hat sich gewaschen" (literally, ‘the Sonata has washed itself’, or, ‘it takes the cake’). After the publication of this sonata in 1802, Beethoven took the sonata form out of its 18th century constraints into entirely new directions.
