Mozart Symphont No. 40 in G minor

🎼🎶 Wednesday, August 18, 2021
Staying in the key of G minor for today, we have Mozart’s wonderful symphony in G minor – the 40th of his 41 symphonies, only two of which were composed in minor keys (the other was the 25th, also in G minor).
This is one of the most loved of Mozart’s works: Beethoven copied out 29 bars in one of his sketchbooks for his 5th Symphony; and Schubert also copied out the minuet, which is strongly invoked in the minuet of his own 5th Symphony . It’s also been suggested that Haydn quoted the second movement in a passage in his Oratorio “The Seasons” as a memorial to his long-dead friend.
Although interpretations differ, the symphony is unquestionably one of Mozart's most greatly admired works.
