Goethe composed the poem “Neue Liebe, neues Leben” (New love, new life) in 1770, when he was romantically involved with Lilli Schoenemann, to whom he was engaged but never married. It’s the tongue-in-cheek lament of a man head-over-heels in love who finds everything in his life turned upside-down against his will.
Beethoven first set it to music in the late 1790’s, then revised it in 1809 and published it as one of the Opus 75 songs. It’s sung here with English subtitles by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
Herz, mein Herz, was soll das geben?
Was bedränget dich so sehr?
Welch ein fremdes neues Leben!
Ich erkenne dich nicht mehr.
Weg ist Alles, was du liebtest,
Weg warum du dich betrübtest,
Weg dein Fleiß und deine Ruh' -

Fesselt dich die Jugendblüte,
Diese liebliche Gestalt,
