In the thirteenth song of Schubert’s “Die Schöne Müllerin”, a casual remark by the maiden about his green lute-ribbon sends the miller into rhapsodies about the color green.

"Schad’ um das schöne grüne Band,
Dass es verbleicht hier an der Wand,
Ich hab’ das Grün so gern!“
So sprachst du, Liebchen, heut’ zu mir;
Gleich knüpf’ ich’s ab und send’ es dir:
Nun hab’ das Grüne gern!
Ist auch dein ganzer Liebster weiss,
Soll Grün doch haben seinen Preis,
Und ich auch hab’ es gern.
Weil unsre Lieb’ ist immergrün,
Weil grün der Hoffnung Fernen blühn,

"What a shame that this lovely green ribbon
