The great composer Robert Schumann, who fought to advance the classical tradition against the encroachment of the romantic school, lamented that he and his associates had made real progress in only one genre – the classical “Lied” (art song).
Schumann himself composed many songs, including several song cycles (“Liederkreis”) - the form earlier pioneered by Beethoven. Today we hear the first song from “Frauenliebe und Leben” (A Woman’s Life and Love).
Seit ich ihn gesehen,
Glaub ich blind zu sein;
Wo ich hin nur blicke,
Seh ich ihn allein;
Wie im wachen Traume
Schwebt sein Bild mir vor,
Taucht aus tiefstem Dunkel,
Heller nur empor.
Sonst ist licht- und farblos
Alles um mich her,
Nach der Schwestern Spiele
Nicht begehr ich mehr,
Möchte lieber weinen,
Still im Kämmerlein;
Seit ich ihn gesehen,
Glaub ich blind zu sein.
