Jennifer Pearl, Chair of the SI NYC Chorus presented the concert of "beautiful choral music that is rarely performed." Along with Carl Maria von Weber's operatic Missa Sancta, Opus 75a and the U.S. premiere of the recently published Stabat Mater composed by a female student of Weber, Amalie von Sachsen, the program also included a second U.S. premiere of Double-choir Concerto No. 9 of Ukrainian-Russian Composer Dmitry Bortniansky, a selection of African American Spirituals. and Beethoven's Trio No. 4, Opus 11.

As our mission states, our chorus is dedicated to promoting peace through the universal language of Classical music including African-American Spirituals. As our namesake, Friedrich Schiller said, “it is through beauty that one proceeds to freedom,” in other words, our best selves are evoked and uplifted when we participate in the beautiful.

The concert began with the Spiritual: “Walk Together Children” resounding with the words “gonna sing and never tire.” This exemplifies the resolute optimism of mankind even in the midst of the worst ugliness and violence. This quality of optimism and hope is reflected in the pieces that follow ending with the final movement of the Weber Mass, in which you will hear the chorus humbly echo the soloists with the words: “Dona nobis pacem,” or “Grant Us Peace."

In this Jubilee year, dubbed by the late Pope Francis as the “year of hope,” it is our wish that mankind return to the “better angels of our nature,” and learn to resolve our differences without war and violence. We invite you to join us in this mission.
